Color

"The whole world, as we experience visually, comes to us through the mystic realm of color."
- Hans Hoffman

Color has formal, expressive, and symbolic qualities that all interact to create a complex principle of design. Pantone is a company that has developed a standardized color system that is used by many industries including graphics, interior design, and fashion. Each season, Pantone produces an official list of ten colors that will be the "fashion colors" used by the majority of apparel companies. A list of the fall 2010 fashion colors are shown above. Fashion colors for fall are typically warm shades with low intensity to reflect many of the natural colors seen during the season. This is the case for Pantone's Fall 2010 color trends as well. To illustrate how fashion colors are derived from colors found in nature, I have focused the next ten posts on Pantone's fashion color forecast for Fall of 2010.

Endive

Pantone's Fall 2010 color, Endive, is similar to the color of dried corn stalks. The image to the far right is from Donna Karan's Resort 2010 collection entitled Aspen Glam and is an example of a monochromatic use of Endive.

Golden Glow

Pantone's Fall 2010 color, Golden Glow, could have been inspired by fall/winter vegetables such as squash.
The image to the far right is from Marc Jacob's Fall 2010 Ready to Wear collection and is an example of the color, Golden Glow.

Living Coral

Pantone's Fall 2010 color, Living Coral, could have been inspired by fall sunsets. An example of this color is to the far right. It is from Banana Republic's Fall 2010 collection.

Lipstick Red

Pantone's Fall 2010 color, Lipstick Red, could have been inspired by the color of apples. An example of this warm, intense color is to the far right. It is from Dolce and Gabanna's Fall 2010 Ready to Wear collection.

Purple Orchid

Pantone's Fall 2010 color, Purple Orchid was probably inspired by the color of an orchid. The outfit on the right is from Burberry Prorsum's Fall 2010 Ready to Wear collection and is an example of the color, Purple Orchid.

Chocolate Truffle

Pantone's Fall 2010 color, Chocolate Truffle, could have been inspired by the color of coffee. The example to the right is from Chanel's Fall 2010 Haute Couture collection and shows the color, Chocolate Truffle.
